According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple is just a few months away from releasing an iPhone SE 2nd generation upgrade. Gurman writes in his recent PowerOn newsletter that the business is planning a virtual launch event in March or April, and that a new iPhone SE is quite likely to arrive.

Many analysts believe the iPhone SE will be Apple’s cheapest 5G-ready phone to date, and many analysts see it as a valuable enabler for users as well as Apple’s carrier partners who are in the process of expanding their 5G networks. The previous-generation iPhone SE was released in 2020 and cost $399. Even if the “5G tax” is factored in, Apple will most likely sell its successor for less than $500 to maintain its competitive advantage.

It’s all about 5G

In terms of the phone itself, it’s turning out to be a somewhat dull upgrade. In recent months, reliable sources such as TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have stated that the 2022 iPhone SE will have the same design as its 2020 brother, which in turn dates back to the iPhone 8 from 2017.

*Update to this tweet!* The iPhone SE with a similar design to the XR/11 with a slightly smaller screen size, has been pushed back to an expected release of 2024. For 2022, Apple will instead release an iPhone SE with 5G, a spec bump, and the same design as the 2020 model.

According to leakster DylanDKT, people hoping for a design change may have to wait until 2024. Even yet, that visual makeover is unlikely to be unique. According to the source, a revised iPhone SE 2nd generation  would resemble the iPhone XR from 2018, but will be slightly smaller.

The 2020 iPhone SE is expected to be powered by Apple’s Bionic A15 technology, which is also found in the iPhone 13 lineup. There’s no word on the rest of the internal components, although a better selfie camera would be a welcome improvement. The front camera on the 2020 iPhone SE will remain at 7 megapixels, but a 12-megapixel front camera could be a pleasant surprise.
