Starting this week, LG will upgrade the Filmmaker Mode function on all 2020 and 2021 4K and 8K UHD Smart TVs. The upgrade will enable these TVs to automatically switch to Filmmaker Mode in response to a signal embedded in specific streaming shows and movies. The feature is now limited to Amazon Prime Video shows and movies, although it could theoretically be applied to any streaming content from any source.

For the uninitiated, Filmmaker Mode is the TV industry’s response to the rising discontent with what’s known as the “soap opera effect.” It’s the idea of the UHD Alliance. Motion-smoothing technologies, which are intended to help modern flat-panel displays do a better job with fast-motion videos, such as sports content, have the unintended consequence of making a lot of other content (such as movies and TV shows) look unnatural and, in many cases, low-budget — hence the soap opera analogy.

Filmmaker Mode was created as a one-button solution to turn off all of that extra picture processing, allowing you to experience material the way its creators intended it to be seen. For some reason, TV manufacturers continue to sell their TVs with motion-smoothing switched on by default.

With LG’s update, you won’t even need to grab for the remote if the streaming material contains the required signal as a trigger – the TV will switch modes on its own. There’s always the option to manually turn motion smoothing back on, although I’m not sure why you’d want to. LG’s automatic technology should, in fact, become standard on all televisions.

Filmmaker Mode is the simplest way to avoid the soap opera effect, and automatic Filmmaker Mode is even easier, but these aren’t the only possibilities for those of us with older TVs. We offer a step-by-step guide on turning off the soap opera effect on any television. If you’ve never changed the factory settings on your TV, it’s worth taking a few minutes to go through the menus and disable any unneeded motion smoothing.

The new capability will work with material from the built-in Amazon Prime Video app on any LG 4K or 8K TV running webOS 5 or webOS 6 in 2020 or 2021. If you use a third-party streaming media device, such as an Apple TV 4K, to stream from Amazon, LG hasn’t said if the embedded signal will be detected by its TVs.
